According to a report by Deadline, the hit Netflix series Sweet Magnolias has been canceled after a five-season run.

The report states that the streaming platform canceled the show because viewership declined. Season 5 registered about 2.8 million views in its opening week, lower than Season 4 after its premiere. Another factor in Netflix’s decision was reportedly the new show Ladies of the House, which will have Sheryl J. Anderson as its showrunner.

Anderson also created and served as showrunner for Sweet Magnolias. As a result, Netflix reportedly had to decide whether to renew Sweet Magnolias for Season 6 or move forward with Ladies of the House.

Sweet Magnolias team reacts to series cancellation

After the cancellation of Sweet Magnolias, the show’s team has shared their thoughts, with the creator thanking fans for all the love. Anderson wrote in an Instagram post, “Living in Serenity for five seasons has been a privilege and a blessing. Though our journey has sadly come to an end, I hope Serenity will always have a place in your heart.”

Actress JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who played Maddie, shared how the show changed her life and became one of her “greatest” joys. She wrote that she is “not quite sure” about saying goodbye to the show. Swisher will now serve as an executive producer on the new series Ladies of the House, and might also feature in it.

Jamie Lynn Spears, who played Noreen, also took to her Instagram account and shared that the people associated with Sweet Magnolias were like her “actual family.” She also thanked the show’s producers for casting her and fans for making the series successful.
