Bono is sharing some insider information on the U2 and Ed Sheeran collaboration “Yours Eternally.”

In a new interview, the U2 frontman was asked about what went down with Ed and Macklemore.

If you didn’t see the news, last month, Ed removed his former opening act Macklemore from the remaining shows on his tour amid backlash to the pro-Palestine comments he made on stage at two New Jersey concerts. All of Ed‘s opening acts and his backing band then dropped out.

“I would say with Ed and Macklemore that we shouldn’t personalize this, what’s going on. [U2 collaborator] Brian Eno said today that pop stars are like little fish in a large sea of huge forces and religion and politics. And so I don’t want to dwell on Ed and Macklemore and that incident,” Bono told Rolling Stone UK.

“I will say this. When we did ‘Yours Eternally’, he was saying, ‘You’re not going to get me into politics, are you?’” Bono recalled. “And I said, ‘This soldier who inspired us, he loved you Ed and you’ve worked on this song.’”

Apparently Ed said in response, according to Bono, “Yeah, but I just want to keep my thing free.” Bono added, “You can’t be pushing people around.”
