Chuck Russell, Horror Movie Director, Dead at 74

The filmmaker—known for his work in The Mask, The Blob and Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors—died at 74 on July 22, his wife Ania Zeyne confirmed.

"He was such a wonderful guy," the actress told The Hollywood Reporter July 24. "He meant everything to me."

A cause of death was not disclosed.

Russell (born Charles Raymond Russell) was found unresponsive by Zeyne at his San Diego home, according to the outlet. TMZ confirmed that fire department personnel responded to a medical emergency involving an unconscious male at Russell’s residence July 23 but were unable to revive him.

During his memorable career, the filmmaker moved millions of fans with his acclaimed work. In addition to directing 1994’s The Mask with Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz, Russell spearheaded the groundbreaking visual effects made by George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic company for the movie, which earned the team an Oscar.

In fact, he admittedly had “quite a battle with the studio” over casting Diaz, who he championed despite her lack of acting experience at the time. As he recounted in a 2002 interview with Cryptic Rock, “The chemistry was so strong between her and Jim in the readings, I just had to fight for Cameron in that role.”

Russell also guided other notable stars from his director's chair over the years, including Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1996’s Eraser, Kim Basinger in 2000’s Bless This Child, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in his first lead role as the titular Scorpion King in 2002, as well as John Travolta in 2016’s I Am Wrath and 2022’s Paradise City.

In addition, Russell was a talented screenwriter, most notably penning 1984’s Dreamscape starring Dennis Quaid.

Along with his wife of 19 years, Russell is survived by his kids Logan, Riley and Carlyn from his previous marriage to ex Patti Rao.
