Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayJames Gunn’s Superman may have served as a fitting launch pad for the revamped DCU, but the film failed to reciprocate its critical success on the financial front, with the Demon Slayer movie currently on track to overtake its box office haul.
The latest entry in the fan-favorite animated franchise is presently crashing box office records all over the world, with its third weekend collection putting Infinity Castle in touching distance of Superman’s lifetime earnings.
Superman’s loss against Demon Slayer shows the state of Superhero movies
Having secured $19.2 million in the third week of its theatrical run, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle has now recouped a whopping $605.4 million at the global box office, as per Box Office Mojo.
In sharp contrast, the David Corenswet-led Superman only mustered $615.6 million in ticket sales, which suggests that the Demon Slayer movie will soon overshadow the collection of what was arguably the most anticipated superhero film of 2025.
In fact, James Gunn’s latest directorial feature has already lost the box office battle to six movies this year. At the time of writing, Superman ranks seventh in the list of the highest-grossing movies of 2025, with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle expected to usurp its spot sooner rather than later. The films that have earned more on the global level than Superman are listed below:
- Ne Zha 2 – $2.15 billion+
- Lilo & Stitch – $1.04 billion+
- A Minecraft Movie – $957.8 million
- Jurassic World Rebirth – $867.1 million
- How to Train Your Dragon – $634.9 million
- F1: The Movie – $626.2 million
2025 has proven to be an underwhelming year for superhero movies in general, with Marvel outings also raking in fewer numbers than expected. Aside from Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps was the only superhero movie that was able to cross the $500 million mark this year, with Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* ending their run in theaters with a collection of $415.1 million and $382.4 million, respectively.
