Gerard Butler recently shared insights about his character’s surprising shift in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. In a recent interview, he explained why Detective Nick O’Brien transitions from cop to criminal. The sequel explores this change through Nick’s evolving partnership with Donnie, played by O’Shea Jackson Jr.

Gerard Butler reveals why Nick becomes a villain in Den of Thieves 2

In an exclusive interview with The Direct, Gerard Butler revealed why his character, Detective Nick O’Brien, turns to crime in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Nick’s descent stems from personal and professional struggles. “He doesn’t feel supported by the cops. He’s divorced. Life has not been so great. But he has Donnie, and Donnie is something to aim for,” Butler shared, explaining Nick’s motivation to collaborate with O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Donnie, the criminal who outsmarted him in the first film.

Butler detailed how Nick’s transformation was driven by disillusionment and frustration. “At the end of the last movie, he thought, ‘I’m screwed, and that guy’s good.’ So it kind of washed him out… but it also brought him back to life,” he said. The film explores how their relationship shifts from adversaries to partners in a heist, leading to unexpected character dynamics.

Director Christian Gudegast, in the same interview, described the sequel as “a buddy movie” focused on Nick and Donnie’s changing bond. “It’s really sort of a love story between Nick and Donnie. These two Americans find themselves in a strange place overseas, and Nick obviously is going to switch sides for the film,” Gudegast said. He explained that the movie explores how the roles of cops and criminals often overlap.

The sequel introduces a new criminal crew called the Panthers. Gudegast shared that the characters are based on real people he met in Europe. “All those characters are based on actual people that I met and know and hung out with in the Balkans and in Europe,” he revealed. He further added that Donnie, initially an outsider, earns his place in the group by proving his skills.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is set to hit theaters on January 10.
