Duncan Sheik has sadly passed away.

The Tony and Grammy winner, best known for his song “Barely Breathing” and composing the Broadway musical Spring Awakening, died on Thursday (September 17) in Manhattan. He was 56.

Duncan‘s mother Suzanne Sheik confirmed the sad news in a statement to The New York Times. His cause of death was organ failure.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik,” a spokesperson for Duncan told People. “The world has a lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit ‘Barely Breathing’ to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”

The statement continued, “Duncan was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Duncan passed away last night surrounded by love.”

Earlier this week, it was revealed that he was receiving medical treatment as he was in “critical but stable condition.” For the past several weeks, Duncan has made several references about being in a hospital on Instagram.

News of Duncan‘s passing comes just days before his new Off-Broadway musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen begins performances on September 25. Later this fall, Spring Awakening is being revived for a major Off-Broadway production in November.

Spring Awakening, which starred Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, first opened on Broadway in 2006. For composing the musical Duncan won the Tony for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.

Duncan is survived by his partner and daughter.

Our thoughts are with Duncan Sheik‘s loved ones at this time. RIP.
