If you deal with acne-prone skin, you know how hard it is to get a clear complexion. The right skincare routine is key to blemish-free skin, but curating the perfect product lineup? This is where things can get tricky.

Acne-prone skin is sensitive, and not all acne has the same root cause. That means trendy solutions and breakthrough products may work for one person and not for another. And for some, they can even make acne worse.

There are plenty of acne-fighting products on the shelves but the uncertainty of their impact has a lot of people turning to natural remedies to keep breakouts at bay.

And ever since Paul Saladino and our founder, Lauryn Bosstick, discussed beef tallow for skincare on The Show, we’ve been curious about it.

The buzz online is that beef fat (tallow) can be an effective acne treatment, and we want to know if it’s just hype or if it’s here to stay. So, that said, we’re digging into the process and discussing safe ways to try it out for yourself. Here’s what we know about beef tallow for acne-prone skin:

In this post, we’ll explore what beef tallow is and whether it’s suitable for acne-prone skin. Then, we’ll share how people are incorporating it into their skincare routines, so you can decide if it’s the right choice for you.

What Is Beef Tallow?

Beef tallow is rendered animal fat from grass-fed cows. We know it sounds gross, but it’s actually been used since the 18th century as a luxurious moisturizer.

It’s rich in fatty acids and vitamins A, D, E, and K that closely mimic the skin’s natural oils. That means it works its way through the skin’s layers to replenish moisture and strengthen your barrier.

Its creamy, balm-like texture melts into the skin, making it a versatile base for salves, balms, and other nourishing skincare products.

Does Beef Tallow Help Acne-Prone Skin?

Beef tallow is having a moment but the verdict’s still out. Some board-certified dermatologists love it for acne-prone skin, while others aren’t completely sold on its efficacy.

Here’s where the controversy comes in: Beef tallow is naturally thick with tons of moisturizing properties. Great for locking in hydration, maybe not so great if you’re prone to clogged pores and oily skin. But since it’s also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, it’s not completely off the table for acne-prone skin, either. See why there’s a little discourse?

That said, it is a promising solution that can produce real results. But as a rule of thumb, always patch test new products and see how your skin reacts.

To help give you a peek into the big picture, we’ll talk about the main benefits of using beef tallow so you know what to expect.

Encourages cell turnover and healing.

Beef tallow contains vitamin A and fatty acids, which may support skin cell renewal and tissue repair. This matters when it comes to fighting acne. Dead skin cells can build up, clogging pores and triggering breakouts.

Plus, the more your skin cells regenerate, the faster old acne scars fade away, evening out your complexion. Curious about other ways to target stubborn acne scars? Check out this post on salmon semen facials. Lauryn swears by the benefits.

Supports skin barrier repair.

Fatty acids like oleic acid in beef tallow closely mimic the natural oils on our face. As a result, the product is able to sink deeply into the skin for lasting hydration.

These fatty acids also strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier, protecting it from water loss and acne-causing bacteria. A strong skin barrier is essential for fighting breakouts because without it, your skin becomes inflamed, dehydrated, and more vulnerable to bacteria. And with all this going on, you can experience slower healing altogether.

Calms swelling and irritation.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in beef tallow has powerful anti-inflammatory effects. If you’re dealing with redness and soreness from breakouts or general skin sensitivity, beef tallow can help soothe that irritation.

And if you often struggle with swelling or puffiness in your face, that’s usually caused by inflammation too. Some people note that when adding beef tallow to their product lineup, they experience less puffiness and irritation altogether.

Moisturizes and balances oil production.

Moisture balance is key to clear skin. But remember, too thick of a moisturizer may not always give those with acne-prone skin the results they’re hoping for. Let’s dive a little deeper.

When your skin produces too much oil, it can clog pores and cause acne. But when your skin is dehydrated, your body overcompensates by making even more oil, which can lead to even more breakouts. This means you need ideal ingredients (and an appropriate amount during application) to achieve a clean complexion feel.

Compared to some moisturizers, a little beef tallow goes a long way. A pea-sized amount (on damp skin, especially) can deliver deep hydration without that greasy, shiny effect. Test it out by applying a small amount to just one side of your face. Give it a week and decide whether or not you’re happy with the results.

Kills acne-causing bacteria.

Bacteria in the pores can, ultimately, be a huge contributor to acne. But since beef tallow has natural antibacterial properties, think of it like applying a moisturizing sanitizer to your skin.

A lot of antibacterial skincare products can be too harsh, stripping your skin and damaging your barrier. Beef tallow, on the other hand, can provide a more gentle approach. There’s a reason it was used in traditional medicine as an antiseptic.

Does Beef Tallow Clog Pores?

We won’t ever lie to you just for the sake of hopping on new, trendy routines. You deserve real answers for real results.

That said, beef tallow scores a 2 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale. Which actually isn’t bad. This indicates that there’s a moderately low likelihood that this product will clog pores.

So, to answer the question: Generally, no. Most people can incorporate beef tallow into their routine and not experience clogged pores and/or breakouts. But does that mean it works for EVERY person with acne-prone skin? No.

It all comes down to individual reactions to different products which is why we’re super big supporters of patch testing. And of using products the right (and safe) way. Let’s look at a quick, easy routine for using beef tallow for acne-prone skin.

How to Use Beef Tallow for Skin

Step One: Choose high-quality beef tallow.

When choosing beef tallow products, look for pure, grass-fed, unscented beef tallow. Whipped tallow is great too, as it’s easier to apply and spreads smoothly on the skin.

If you’d prefer not to use the pure rendered form, tallow-based skincare products are a great alternative. One favorite is Toups & Co’s Tallow Balm, a whipped organic beef tallow cream blended with beneficial essential oils.

For more insight into Toups & Co’s natural skincare approach, check out founder Emilie Toup’s episode with The Bossticks. Lauryn loves all their products.

Step Two: Prep your tallow with oils.

If you’re using pure tallow, whipping it first makes it softer and much easier to apply. Once whipped, you can use it as is, or enhance it with a few drops of jojoba oil or other skin-friendly essential oils.

Frankincense and lavender are great options for added benefits, while jojoba oil helps improve texture and provides extra hydration. This makes the tallow even more spreadable and nourishing.

Step Three: Cleanse your face first.

Always apply moisturizing skincare products to clean skin. The last thing you want is for bacteria and debris to sink in along with the oils.

Start with an acne-friendly cleanser and lukewarm water to gently clean your skin. We recommend cleansers with hyaluronic acid or salicylic acid, because they cleanse without drying out the skin.

Another helpful hack we’re big fans of? Double cleansing. If you’ve you’ve never heard of it, read this post. You’ll want TSC’s face towels for this.

Step Four: Drink plenty of water beforehand.

It’s best to hydrate your skin before using beef tallow. Moist skin helps the rich oils sink in, so your skin can really soak up all the nourishing vitamins and fatty acids.

Hydration also makes facial manipulation feel smoother and gentler. Soft, supple skin means less tugging or irritation, making your self-care routine feel relaxing instead of rough.

Plus, hydrated skin bounces back faster and stays more elastic, so your application can offer the most gains. And these benefits apply no matter what skincare product you’re using. Think: Enhanced circulation, reduced puffiness, and effortlessly glowy skin.

To be sure you’re hydrating properly, add a scoop of this to your first glass of water in the morning.

Step Five: Do a patch test.

Before using beef tallow all over your face, it’s a good idea to do a patch test. Apply a little tallow to a small area, like behind your ear or along your jawline, and see how your skin reacts.

This helps you make sure your skin loves it and avoids any surprise redness or irritation.

As mentioned before, beef fat typically has low comedogenic properties. However, this patch test gives you peace of mind that you’re adding the right product to your specific routine.

Step Six: Apply the tallow to your face.

Take a small amount of beef tallow and warm it between your fingers until it softens. Then, gently press and pat it onto your skin. Use light, upward strokes to spread it evenly. Make sure you’re focusing on the areas that feel dry or need a little extra care.

Step Seven: Do your fascia stretching.

Our founder, Lauryn, is a HUGE fan of fascia stretching. You can learn exactly how she does it here. Or, visit her tutorials here and here. For now, here’s a quick guide on how to do fascia stretching with beef tallow.

After warming a small amount of beef tallow between your fingers, gently press and pat it onto your skin.

Use the tallow as a slippery, nourishing layer so your fingers can glide easily over your face without tugging. While the tallow is on, perform gentle fascia stretches to release tension and promote circulation:

Neck Release: Place fingertips at your collarbone, apply light downward pressure, and slowly tilt your head back and forth.

Cheek Sweep: Place fingertips along your jawline, press gently, and sweep upward toward the temples to encourage lifting.

Forehead Lift: Place your palm flat on your forehead, gently push upward while slowly leaning your head back to stretch the fascia.

This way, your skin gets the moisture and nourishment from the tallow while your fascia and muscles relax. The gentle massage and circulation help reduce puffiness and calm acne-prone areas, leaving your face soft, lifted, and glowing.

Step Eight: Use facial manipulation techniques.

After applying beef tallow, a gentle facial massage helps stimulate circulation, ease tension, and support healthy skin.

Lymphatic drainage can reduce puffiness and inflammation, which is especially helpful for acne-prone skin. Sweep from the center of your face outward—toward the temples, jawline, and neck.

Tools like the TSC Face Massager make this even easier. Its smooth surface helps your fingers glide, boosts circulation, and penetrate the tallow even further. Regular use leaves your skin soft, radiant, and calm, while supporting natural facial contours.

Step Nine: Leave on and remove after an hour.

After applying and massaging in the beef tallow, let it sit on your skin for about an hour. This gives your skin time to absorb the nutrients and allows your muscles to fully relax.

When it’s time to remove it, use a soft, damp cloth or a gentle cleanser with lukewarm water. Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing, so you keep all the benefits while avoiding irritation.

This leaves your skin feeling hydrated, soothed, and refreshed, ready for the next step in your skincare routine.

Step Ten: Repeat 2-3 times a week.

For acne-prone skin, use beef tallow 2–3 times a week. This gives your skin time to absorb nutrients, repair its barrier, and calm inflammation without overloading pores.

On the days you don’t use your tallow, stick to gentle cleansing and lightweight hydration to maintain balance. This will keep your skin calm, nourished, and less prone to flare-ups.

Beef tallow can be a gentle, natural way to care for your acne-prone skin.

Finding products suitable for acne-prone skin can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. Beef tallow is worth trying to see if it works for you. There’s something else you should also try if you struggle with breakouts. TSC’s face towels.
