Keanu Reeves’ acclaimed R-rated action thriller will leave HBO Max soon, giving subscribers a limited time to stream it. The film launched a blockbuster action franchise that has since expanded with multiple sequels and spin-offs.

John Wick is leaving HBO Max next month

HBO Max subscribers have limited time left to stream John Wick, as the platform will remove the Keanu Reeves-led R-rated action film on August 1, 2026.

Chad Stahelski directed John Wick, while David Leitch co-directed the film and Derek Kolstad wrote the screenplay. Lionsgate released the action thriller in theaters on October 24, 2014. The film launched one of Hollywood’s most successful action franchises, leading to multiple sequels and spin-offs.

The story follows John Wick, a retired assassin who leaves behind his violent past after the death of his wife. However, Iosef Tarasov, the son of powerful crime boss Viggo Tarasov, shatters his quiet life by breaking into his home with a group of men. They steal his prized car and kill the puppy his wife left him as her final gift.

Driven by grief and revenge, Wick returns to the criminal underworld to track down those behind the attack. As his search intensifies, Viggo attempts to protect his son by placing a bounty on Wick, setting off a deadly confrontation.

Reeves leads the cast as John Wick. The film also stars Michael Nyqvist as Viggo Tarasov, Alfie Allen as Iosef Tarasov, Adrianne Palicki as Ms. Perkins, Bridget Moynahan as Helen, and Dean Winters as Avi, among others.

The film was widely praised by critics upon release. On Rotten Tomatoes, John Wick holds an 87 percent critics’ score. Meanwhile, audiences have given it an 82 percent audience score. Before becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises, John Wick was a sleeper hit at the box office, earning approximately $86 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $30 million. Its success paved the way for multiple sequels and spin-offs.
