According to a new report, Kevin Costner once fought one of his Yellowstone co-stars while filming a scene on the hit Western TV show.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed new details involving an on-set fight that occurred between Costner and Wes Bentley. Costner, the star and executive producer on Yellowstone, was filming a scene with Bentley and Kelly Reilly on a soundstage in Utah.

Costner reportedly urged Bentley to follow his instructions on how to play the scene and “ditch Taylor Sheridan’s script.” Bentley refused, saying he signed up for Sheridan’s show, not a “Kevin Costner production.”

“Kevin didn’t like that, and he lunged at him,” said a source in THR’s story. “No fists were thrown, but they were in each other’s faces, pushing and shoving and just getting hot until they had to be separated.”

According to one witness, Reilly was in tears. Production was briefly shut down following the scuffle.

Costner’s Yellowstone troubles continued after the Bentley fight. Costner and Sheridan, Yellowstone’s creator, engaged in a feud that spilled into the public following the first half of Season 5. Costner’s commitment to directing Horizon: An American Saga interfered with his Yellowstone obligations. After failing to compromise on a salary and filing schedule, Costner confirmed his departure from the show in June 2024.

On Yellowstone, Costner played John Dutton, the owner of the powerful Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. In 2023, Costner won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama.

Speaking of Horizon, Costner’s four-part Western film series has stalled. Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 opened in theaters in June 2024 to mixed reviews and a disappointing $38 million gross at the worldwide box office.

Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 was originally scheduled for an August 2024 release. Due to the poor returns from Chapter 1, Warner Bros. pulled Chapter 2 from its theatrical calendar. Chapter 2 does not have a release date. Chapters 3 and 4 are still in development.
