Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe upcoming Miami Vice movie is looking to add another huge star to the cast.
Miami Vice originated as a crime drama television series created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann for NBC. Starring Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Rubbs, the show ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1989.
The series was turned into a 2006 movie that was directed by Mann and stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Now, F1 director Joseph Kosinski is working on a new reboot film for Universal Pictures that is expected to arrive in 2026.
Nexus Point News first broke the news that Michael B. Jordan was in talks to star as Rico in the Miami Vice reboot nearly a month ago. Yesterday, Deadline then reported that Jordan had officially been offered the part “after the studio worked to move dates so that Jordan could finish post on his next directing gig, The Thomas Crown Affair, and also shoot this.”
Who is in talks to join Miami Vice with Michael B. Jordan?
Now, Deadline is reporting that Austin Butler is in talks to play Sonny in Miami Vice. The deal is not yet final at this time.
Butler was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in 2022’s Elvis. In 2025, he starred in Ari Aster’s Eddington and Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, while his filmography also includes 2009’s Aliens in the Attic, 2016’s Yoga Hosers, 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 2023’s The Bikeriders, and 2024’s Dune: Part Two, among other titles.
The script for Miami Vice comes from Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy, while Kosinski and Dylan Clark both serve as producers. Production is expected to begin in 2026, with the movie then hitting theaters on August 6, 2027.
