Genndy Tartakovsky’s new Conan the Barbarian series just dropped its first look, and it looks nothing like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s classic. The animated Prime Video series reveals its full title, storyline, and early development details.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Conan the Barbarian series gets first look

Prime Video and Cartoon Network Studios officially announced a new animated Conan the Barbarian series at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 24.

Animation legend Genndy Tartakovsky will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the project. The series carries the full title Conan the Barbarian: Queen of the Black Coast.

Tartakovsky first pitched a Conan series back in 2008, but the project only now found a home with Amazon. The show remains in early development and likely won’t premiere for several years. However, the announcement did include a first-look poster revealing Tartakovsky’s animated take on the iconic character.

The official logline describes the story’s central conflict in vivid terms. “After finding love in the pirate queen, Bêlit, a battle-hardened Conan defies gods, fate, and even death to save her from a dark sorcery that threatens to destroy everything,” the logline reads. Darrick Bachman, Fred Malmberg, and Mark Wheeler will also serve as executive producers alongside Tartakovsky.

Tartakovsky shared a video message with Annecy attendees during the announcement. He joked that he hopes to share animatics next year and rough animation in 2028. Additionally, he expressed a personal connection to Robert E. Howard, who is widely considered the creator of the sword-and-sorcery genre.

Notably, this marks Tartakovsky’s first full commitment to a well-known IP since his Star Wars: Clone Wars series in 2003. His involvement signals Amazon’s growing investment in the sword-and-sorcery space alongside other fantasy properties.

Meanwhile, the status of Tartakovsky’s previously planned Game of Thrones project remains unclear following this new announcement.
