Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently shared a significant update about the status of Top Gun 3 with Tom Cruise.

What is the latest Top Gun 3 update?

While speaking at TheWrap’s TheGrill 2025 conference, Bruckheimer spoke about his list of upcoming projects. One of those movies is Top Gun 3, the third entry into the aviation action franchise.

According to Bruckheimer, Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick, is expected to turn in the latest draft for Top Gun 3 next month.

Top Gun 3 was first announced in January 2024. Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is expected to direct the third movie. Cruise is attached to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The plan for Top Gun 3 is to pair Cruise with Miles Teller and Glen Powell, who played Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw and Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick.

In May, Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Christopher McQuarrie revealed that he and Kruger “cracked the story” for Top Gun 3.

“Ehren Kruger pitched something, and I went, ‘Mhm, actually,’ and we had one conversation about it, and the framework is there,” McQuarrie said. “So, no, it’s not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.”

Top Gun 3 has no release date attached at Paramount. Kosinski is attached to direct the Miami Vice reboot, which hits theaters on August 6, 2027. Production on Miami Vice is expected to begin in 2026. If Paramount still wants Kosinski to direct Top Gun 3, the earliest it could come out is likely 2028.
