It dramatizes the family life of William Shakespeare, portrayed by Mescal, and his wife, Agnes Hathaway, portrayed by Jessie Buckley, as they cope with the loss of their 11-year-old son Hamnet. The film stars Emily Watson as Mary Shakespeare, Joe Alwyn as Bartholomew Hathaway, and Jacobi Jupe as Hamnet Shakespeare.

Co-written by Zhao and O’Farrell, the film had its world premiere at the 52nd Telluride Film Festival on August 29, 2025. It had a limited theatrical release in the US in November 2025 and received a wider release on December 5, 2025.

The Paul Mescal movie won numerous accolades, including Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. Hamnet was nominated in eight categories at the 98th Oscars, with Buckley winning the Academy Award for Best Actress. The movie currently holds an 86% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
