Phil Lord and Chris Miller are adding another comedy to their slate. The duo behind Project Hail Mary will produce a new feature for Universal Pictures. The project signals a clear vote of confidence from the studio in rising comedic voices.

For Lord and Miller, whose Project Hail Mary became one of the biggest blockbusters of 2026, the move reaffirms their commitment to shepherding offbeat, genre-blending material through their production company.

I Promise We’re Cool lands Lord and Miller as producers

The film, titled I Promise We’re Cool, is described as a high-concept high school comedy with a sci-fi twist, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Plot specifics remain under wraps, but reported sources indicate the story elements sit comfortably within the wheelhouse of Lord and Miller.

The duo wrote and directed iconic 21 Jump Street and, most recently, directed the space-faring adventure Project Hail Mary. Charlie Hall, whose acting credits include The Sex Lives of College Girls and Monster: The Ed Gein Story, has been tapped to write the script. Max Tzannes, part of the filmmaking collective Dirty Shot Clean, is set to direct. The pairing places considerable creative responsibility on two talents still early in their feature careers.

After all, Hall has been steadily expanding beyond acting. He is developing a scripted comedy series titled C-League for Hulu and currently appears in Apple TV+’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed opposite Tatiana Maslany. He is also in production on the latest season of HBO’s White Lotus.

On the other hand, Tzannes made his feature debut with Et Tu, a Shakespearean comedy-thriller. His follow-up, Found Footage: The Making of the Patterson Project, drew industry notice for its inventive structure. Basically, a mockumentary-style examination of an indie filmmaker attempting to shoot a found-footage Bigfoot movie.

Now, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce through Lord Miller. The duo has built their reputation on subverting established genres. Their filmography spans the animated franchises Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, and the Spider-Verse series.
