The jacket has a clean, understated appearance that works well both on the trail and around town. Its lightweight construction makes it easy to pack into its zippered chest pocket, while the fit leaves enough room for layering. It works especially well over a Polartec Alpha fleece, for example. This creates a warm, highly adaptable system for cool, changeable conditions. The fleece insulates while staying breathable, and the Pendower helps block wind without adding much weight.

The Pendower hood is pre-cinched behind the head to keep it snug and has a brim to keep the sun out of your eyes. I have a small hat size, so it's a bit slack on me, but it fills out when worn with a fleece beanie (or if you have a larger head). Fully adjustable windbreaker hoods are pretty rare, especially these days in the race to make the lightest weight gear and clothing.

The chest pocket is large enough to hold a Smartphone and has a fabric key fob inside, while the stretch cuffs are wide enough to roll up your arm. The exterior fabric is thin and very quiet, even in gusty wind. These details make the jacket easy to wear and use as a windbreaker.

As a windproof outer layer, the Pendower performs well in windy and exposed conditions. It is particularly useful when conditions are too cold and breezy for a fleece alone but not wet enough to justify a heavier waterproof shell, which would retain too much body heat.

The stretch cuffs are easy to pull up your arms to vent excess warmth.

Breathability is reasonable during gentle to moderate activity. When walking quickly or climbing steep hills, heat can build up, especially when worn over a warm midlayer. This combination is best managed by adjusting layers as activity levels change. Unzipping the central zipper, removing the hood, or rolling up the sleeves all let you dump excess body heat without stopping to remove garments.

The low weight is one of the jacket’s biggest advantages. It is easy to carry until needed and takes up little space in a pack. The simple construction also makes it practical for regular use, whether walking, traveling, or wearing around town. Rather than a standalone warm jacket, it works best as part of a layering system.
