PlayStation users will soon lose access to more than 500 movies. This shocking update from Sony means users can no longer truly own digital purchases despite paying for them.

Why is Sony removing over 500 movies from PlayStation accounts?

Due to a licensing agreement with Studio Canal, PlayStation users will lose access to over 500 of their purchased movies after September 1, 2026. Sony’s recently released legal notice confirmed this news. The total number of titles affected by this update is 550.

Sony’s official notice reads, “From September 1, 2026, due to our content licensing agreements, you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library.”

All Studio Canal titles purchased by PlayStation account holders will be removed after the said date. Movies such as A Bigger Splash, A Dangerous Man, A Date for Mad Mary, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, A Good Man, Big Eyes, Big Game, and Blood Alley won’t be part of users’ library of purchased content.

Chernobyl Diaries, Chevalier, Dead Night, Dead of Night, Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Rambo: First Blood, RoboCop (2014), Sharknado, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day are also among the affected titles, and many more.

The most disappointing part of the announcement is that users won’t even get a refund for the movies they lose access to.

Interestingly, it’s not the first time Sony has made such an unexpected decision. Back in December 2023, they announced users would lose access to all of their purchased Discovery TV shows after December 31.

Later, however, the company backtracked on its decision after massive backlash on social media. It then extended the access duration of the purchased Discovery titles by 30 more months. That duration, though, came to an end this month.
