The Old Guard 2 has performed poorly with the critics, but it appears that a third movie can still potentially get made. The second entry in Netflix’s The Old Guard movie series currently has a 24% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the movie has become a massive hit on the streaming platform since its release.

The Old Guard 2 proves to be a huge hit on Netflix

The Old Guard 2 premiered on Netflix on July 2, 2025, and was widely panned by critics. For instance, Empire Magazine’s Kelechi Ehenulo called it “a convoluted, sequel-baiting mess that proves time is not a healer.” However, the movie’s impressive performance with the Netflix viewership has made The Old Guard 3 a real possibility. Following its release, The Old Guard 2 became an instant hit, claiming the top spot on Netflix’s list of Global Top 10 movies for the week of June 30 to July 6 by accumulating 37.5 million views and 66.8 million hours of total viewership. Netflix has previously greenlit sequels to popular movies despite their poor performance with the critics. The Kissing Booth movie series, featuring Joey King and Jacob Elordi, is a good example of this. Accordingly, given the considerable audience response to the second movie, Netflix can go forward with The Old Guard 3.

The Old Guard 2 ends on a cliffhanger, leaving the possibility open for a third movie. Last week, Charlize Theron, who portrays Andromache “Andy” of Scythia and serves as a producer, told Variety that they were going to “take a break” from the franchise. She said, “We’re going to take a break, take a little breather, and then we’ll come back and decide.”

Further, Victoria Mahoney, who helmed the second movie, confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she will not direct the prospective third chapter, though she expressed hope that “the third one has a ball and kicks a–.”
