HBO and DC Studios’ upcoming V for Vendetta adaptation may have run into trouble. The network was reported to be developing a new version of the story following the 2005 film last year. At the time, it was reported that Pete Jackson would be penning the script for the new show.

What is the update on the V for Vendetta HBO TV show?

According to Jeff Sneider from The InSneider, HBO has passed on the script that Pete Jackson turned in. According to Sneider’s sources, “Jackson delivered a period-themed take” on the property, which ran contrary to what HBO wanted. According to an insider at HBO, it doesn’t mean the series is dead. Instead, Sneider notes that V for Vendetta may still be “redeveloped with another writer down the line.”

The V for Vendetta series will reportedly be executive-produced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The franchise originated in the graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and illustrator David Lloyd, quickly becoming one of DC’s most iconic comic stories. The 2006 film adaptation starred Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving as the masked vigilante. Directed by James McTeigue, the film was positively received and grossed over $134 million globally.

DC Studios is currently focusing on its DC Universe, with the HBO series Lanterns and a Jimmy Olsen or Gorilla Grodd TV show in the works. Gunn is also directing Man of Tomorrow, which will be released next year.

V for Vendetta follows the titular character as a revolutionary wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, waging war on the tyrannical state. Over the course of the story, V inspires a young woman, Evey Hammond, to follow in his footsteps.

Those who want more V for Vendetta can look forward to a rerelease of the 2005 film on its 20th anniversary. The film will be back in theaters on November 5, 2026.
