Ariana Grande is releasing a new album petal in just a few days, and you might be wondering about the reason behind the name of her eighth studio album.

The forthcoming record includes lead single “hate that i made you love me,” which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the 33-year-old superstar’s 10th No. 1 record on the chart.

petal is the follow-up to 2024’s eternal sunshine, and she explained the album title while presenting the new music in a meeting.

“It’s called petal, basically about something that is full of life, growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging,” she began.

“It’s kind of about breaking up with all different kinds of negative attachments, whether it’s my own monsters in my own head, external voices, things that no longer serve me. It was a writing experiment for me to use that as the template, so that I could be talking about one thing, sharing something, and people could use it however they want, and apply it to their own life.”

“It’s a little feral, as well, yeah, it’s definitely from a place that I have been, maybe, like, too shy or polite to tap into before, and this kinda just feels like, ‘f–k it,'” Ariana added.

Ariana also unveiled the full track list for petal at a tour stop, and also teased the music video for the title track at a recent concert stop in NYC. The album is set to be released on July 31.

At the same time, Ariana‘s love life has once again been making headlines as she’s rekindled romance with an ex from years ago.
