What I like about this windscreen is that it works with all my canister stoves. Like most backpackers, I own a couple of canister stoves which I use in different circumstances or when the mood strikes me.

Cook Pot Packability

While a stove-independent canister stove windscreen is great, it's hard to know whether you can pack it, along with all your stove system components, into your cookpot for easy transport. I happen to place a very high value on this level of packability, as do most backpackers.

The Wild Thing Windscreen fits with my cook system, but it's hard to know without buying it whether it will fit in your cookpot with your other stove system components.

Just because I can pack the Wild Thing Windscreen, a small gas canister, an MSR Pocket Rocket, and a plastic folding canister stand into an Evernew Ultralight Titanium Cookpot doesn't mean you can replicate my success with your cook system components.

While the Wild Thing windscreen is general purpose, it isn't super packable

The problem is the shape of the Wild Thing Windscreen, which isn't very space-optimal, either folded or unfolded. While I could pack it into my cook pot above, I had to swap a larger canister for a smaller one to fit everything.

Flat Cat Gear, which also makes canister stove windscreens, addresses this issue by emphasizing packability and fuel savings, but it limits the number of stoves and, in some cases, the stove-and-pot combinations it supports.

Of course, you can opt to just use a Jetboil or a Wind Burner stove system, which hardwires the stove and pot combination, but those stove systems tend to be comparatively heavier.

The Wild Thing Canister Stove Windscreen is a good choice for backpackers who want one windscreen that works with several small canister stoves. Its low weight, simple magnetic attachment, and broad compatibility are its main advantages. It can improve stove performance in windy conditions without committing the user to a stove-specific system.

Its main limitation is packability. Backpackers who want to fit every cooking component into a single pot may prefer a more compact, stove-specific design. For users who value flexibility more than maximum space efficiency, however, the Wild Thing is a useful and well-conceived accessory.

Overall assessment: Recommended for multi-stove users; less suitable for those who prioritize the smallest possible cook system.
