AMC has dropped new footage from The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, and it confirms the spinoff’s creative swing. The preview shows that Maggie Rhee and Negan Smith’s relationship will undergo a change. Fans who have tracked the pair’s volatile journey face an arc no one predicted.

Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie, sets the expectations in the behind-the-scenes reel. “We have a new vibe this year,” she states, suggesting a deliberate break from the show’s established formula. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who portrays Negan, pushes that idea further, promising “completely new tone and new relationships” when Dead City Season 3 releases.

Central to this reinvention sits a single, violent act from the previous finale. Maggie drove a blade into Negan during Season 2’s closing moments, an attack most viewers interpreted as pure vengeance. Cohan now reframes it entirely. “I’m tired of being angry. Aren’t you?” her character says in the footage.

The BTS footage itself shows zombie-heavy action sequences with quieter character beats, featuring finished scenes alongside production moments. What emerges is a portrait of two survivors who have exhausted their capacity for hatred and stumbled into something far more complicated.

Furthermore, behind the camera, big changes have also been made. Seth Hoffman now runs Dead City Season 3, taking the reins from series creator Eli Jorné. Hoffman’s resume includes scripting some of the flagship Walking Dead and more.

Morgan credits Hoffman and the directing team with granting the cast unusual creative freedom. “Seth and the directors gave us a lot of latitude this year to kind of just play within the scenes and play we did,” he says in the preview. That looseness, he implies, allowed the actors to discover unscripted nuances in a relationship evolving from mutual loathing to genuine partnership.

The plot mechanics support this pivot. Maggie and Negan now plan to restore Manhattan itself, transforming the isolated island from a zombie-infested prison into something resembling civilization.

Dead City Season 3 is releasing on July 26 on AMC and AMC+.
